Size

A black steel caliper stand that holds a specimen between two threaded, adjustable jaws, so the piece sits suspended inside the arc and stays visible from both sides. It suits individuals, end cuts, and slices that will not rest well on a flat stand or easel, from small lunar fragments to hand-sized iron meteorites. Available in two sizes.

Sizes

Small

  • Holds specimens up to about 3 in, jaw to jaw
  • About 6 in tall to the top of the arc; about 8.5 in with the upper screw fully extended
  • Base: 2 x 1.25 in
  • Weight: 80 g

Large

  • Holds specimens up to about 5 in, jaw to jaw
  • About 9 in tall to the top of the arc; about 11 in with the upper screw fully extended
  • Base: 3 x 1.75 in
  • Weight: 175 g

Measurements are approximate and taken by hand. The jaws are screw adjusted, so the stand also holds pieces well under the maximum opening.

How to set a specimen

Back the upper screw out, rest the specimen on the lower jaw, and turn the upper screw down until the piece is held snug. Light contact is enough. On fusion crust, friable chondrites, or thin slices, avoid overtightening.

Frequently asked questions

Is the meteorite in the photos included?
No. The stand is sold on its own. The specimens are shown only to give a sense of scale and fit.

Which size do I need?
Measure the specimen along the axis you want the jaws to grip. Up to about 3 in, the small works. Up to about 5 in, choose the large. We have not rated a maximum weight, so for a heavy piece, send us its size and weight and we will tell you which stand fits.

Who sells this stand?
