Provenance

Tarda is a confirmed fall. On 25 August 2020 at about 2:30 in the afternoon local time, a fireball was widely witnessed across southern Morocco, travelling from southwest to northeast. Eyewitnesses as far as 150 km away described a bright yellow fireball with green edges, followed by a thick trail of white smoke that hung in the air for several seconds, a whistling sound, and multiple detonations. Searching began the same day, and the first piece was recovered the following day by Alalou Youssef near his village of Tarda. The strewnfield is about 3 km long, roughly 10 km east of Tarda. The meteorite was classified by a team drawn from the University of New Mexico, the University of Washington, Arizona State University, Florida State University, Washington University in St. Louis, Université Hassan II Casablanca, NASA Johnson Space Center and Helmholtz Zentrum München, and published in the Meteoritical Bulletin, MB 109. Oxygen isotope values do not overlap those of any established carbonaceous chondrite group, which is the basis for the ungrouped designation. This 2.03 gram complete individual was acquired by Treasure Coast Meteorite Co. and offered as a classified specimen.

On verification. The serial number on the accompanying certificate card is an index to this record. The photographs above and the stated weight are what identify this specimen. Meteorite surfaces, clast patterns and cut faces are individual to each stone, so a specimen can be compared directly against these images and weighed against the figure recorded here to two decimal places.
On handling. The Meteoritical Bulletin records Tarda stones as friable, of low density, and particularly susceptible to moisture, noting that material slakes rapidly in contact with water or alcohol. This specimen should be kept dry and handled as little as possible.
