Provenance

Gebel Kamil was found on 19 February 2009 in and around the 45 metre Kamil impact crater in the East Uweinat Desert of Egypt. The crater was identified by V. De Michele, former curator of the Natural History Museum in Milan, and the material was recovered by an Italian-Egyptian geophysical team working under the 2009 Italian-Egyptian Year of Science and Technology. About 1600 kg of iron shrapnel was found, in thousands of pieces ranging from under one gram to 35 kg, together with a single 83 kg individual covered in well developed regmaglypts. The meteorite was classified by M. D'Orazio at the University of Pisa and Luigi Folco at the Museo Nazionale dell'Antartide in Siena, and published in the Meteoritical Bulletin, MB 98. The Meteoritical Bulletin records the main mass of the recovered specimens as held by the Egyptian Geological Museum in Cairo. This 1414.00 gram individual was acquired by Treasure Coast Meteorite Co. and offered as a classified specimen.
