Provenance

Seymchan was found in June 1967 in a brook bed flowing into the Hekandue river, a left tributary of the Jasachnaja, in the Magadan district of what was then the USSR. The larger specimen of about 300 kg was found by the geologist F. A. Mednikov during a geological survey, lying among the stones of the brook bed. A second specimen of about 51 kg was found 20 metres away by I. H. Markov with a mine detector in October 1967. The main mass was turned over to the Academy of Sciences of the USSR. Originally described as an iron meteorite and later listed as IIE and then as ungrouped, Seymchan was reclassified as a main group pallasite following the work of van Niekerk and colleagues in 2007. The meteorite is documented in Buchwald's Handbook of Iron Meteorites (1975). This 591.00 gram full slice was acquired by Treasure Coast Meteorite Co. and offered as a classified specimen.

On verification. The serial number on the accompanying certificate card is an index to this record. The photographs above and the stated weight are what identify this specimen. Meteorite surfaces, clast patterns and cut faces are individual to each stone, so a specimen can be compared directly against these images and weighed against the figure recorded here to two decimal places.
