Provenance

Sebkha el Melah 001 was found in late March 2022 in the region of Wad Alhath in Mali by Sahrawi meteorite hunters, with approximately 17 kilograms recovered. The Meteoritical Bulletin records that Bachir Salek obtained 12.5 kilograms, including the 3550 gram main mass, and holds the main mass. A 216 gram type specimen is on deposit at the University of New Mexico. This specimen was acquired by Treasure Coast Meteorite Co. Treasure Coast Meteorite Co. is not a recorded holder in the Bulletin entry. Given the scarcity of this material and the large size of this piece, a registry number is warranted: the Bulletin writeup records the largest single crystal of this meteorite at 45 grams.

On verification. The serial number on the accompanying certificate card is an index to this record. The photographs above and the stated weight are what identify this specimen. Meteorite surfaces, clast patterns and cut faces are individual to each stone, so a specimen can be compared directly against these images and weighed against the figure recorded here to two decimal places.
